I was delighted to accept the invitation to serve as honorary chairman of this year’s edition of the Rosemère International Caricature Biennial. Held on the theme of Freedom of Expression, this Biennial provides an all-too-rare opportunity for Québec to celebrate caricature by exhibiting it, creating it, and analyzing it from every angle in conference and round table events.

The theme of “freedom of expression” is all the more timely in 2015, the year that opened with the barbaric attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris, on January 7. This event, which outraged cartoonists on every continent, not to mention anyone who values freedom of expression, raises questions that far exceed the framework of editorial cartoons. The Biennial will therefore be an opportunity for us to reflect on the difficult conditions faced by this art form in many regions of the world.

While there are those who believe derision should be prohibited, the Biennial will once again strive to prove the opposite by presenting a wealth of caricatures produced by artists such as (…names of guest cartoonists). These drawings will, I hope, bring smiles to our faces and lead to intelligent reflection.

I look forward to seeing you in large numbers!
